Among the most important purposes of SYA are:

  • Each youth should have substantial active participation in each game
  • Each sport should be well equipped and be an asset to the community
The coaching, officiating, etc., should be largely from volunteers who have been trained
  • All children should have an opportunity to play regardless of sex, nationality or ability
  • Active participation of parents and children should help strengthen family relationships
  • Teams should be balanced for competition and fun
  • Excellence in individual skills, team play and sportsmanship should be taught by the coaches
  • Fields and facilities should be developed for active and safe play for SYA and the community
  • Each youth should practice diligently and strive to improve his or her playing ability, thereby experiencing growth
  • Winning is a short term accomplishment and soon to be forgotten

Good sportsmanship lasts a lifetime

  • Self-discipline can be a major factor in developing meaningful self-respect, respect for the rights of other and respect for the law
  • For the younger age groups, coaching and officiating should be devoted towards basic rules and safe play and should be largely teaching
  • In the older age groups, playing strategies should be emphasized along with the finer points of the game
  • Reckless and dangerous play should be avoided
