WELCOME ALL EXISTING AND POTENTIAL SYA RUGBY PLAYERS 2010
Unfortunately, over the last two years the SYA Rugby program has seen a dramatic decline in the number of participants in this program. We have also lost our Commissioner who would help rejuvenate membership in this excellent sport. The current economy is taking a toll on everyone. This year we are directing our current and future players to our good neighbors in Chantilly at the CYA Rugby program. You can contact them by sending an email to Didier Perdu at rugby@chantillyyouth.org. For the future we are very interested in bringing Rugby back to SYA and are actively looking for a Commissioner. While we may have lost our previous Commissioner, Chris Kirkwood, Chris has offered to assist anyone interested in getting Rugby back to SYA. Please contact us if you are interested.
Thank you

What is youth rugby?... ...A GREAT SPORT FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES!!!
Youth Rugby is a fast, exciting, high scoring game for kids of all ages. Boys and girls, ages 6-16. We even have rugby for older kids ages 17-70 (or even older, believe it or not). Youth Rugby emphasizes FUN - running with the ball, running in support, passing, kicking. No matter what position you play, you will get your hands on the ball. You will pass to your teammates, and your teammates will pass to you. You will have FUN! You will make tags (touch rugby) or tackles (older players), and you will get tagged and tackled. You will have more FUN! You will learn to think quickly about what to do next. Team skills, offense, defense, scrums, lineouts, rucks, mauls - did we say FUN? Rugby is all about FUN! And scoring? Let's not forget scoring - who doesn't like that? Lots of scoring for everyone on the team! Did we mention FUN?
Youth Rugby is a also great way to stay in shape or get in shape for your fall sport. You will be fit and ready to go for the fall. Stay active this summer, two to three times a week, every week from around the time school lets out until school starts. Play RUGBY!
Players under age 11 will play the touch version of the game. Players 11 and older, depending on the team you join, can play the touch or tackle version of the game, or both. You've seen rugby on TV? Well, it's not quite like that, but it's pretty close. All rules of rugby apply with rule modifications in the interest of safety and considering the player's age, size, strength, and skill level. Most coaches have USA rugby coaching certification and safety is number one.
Kids, tell your parents you want to play rugby this summer. Stay active, stay fit, stay busy. Make new friends, learn a new sport.
Youth Rugby since before 2000... ...and still growing.
Youth Rugby has been part of the northern Virginia youth sports scene since 2000 (and several years before that in Maryland), having been sponsored by Southwestern Youth Association (SYA; Centreville), Springfield Youth Club (SYC), with Alexandria and Winchester entering the league in 2003.
In addition to the existing clubs, 2006 saw a large expansion to other youth sports organizations (YSO's) in northern Virginia: Chantilly Youth Association (CYA), Vienna Youth, Inc (VYI), Braddock Road Youth Club (BRYC), Fairfax Police Youth Club (FPYC), Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association (FHYAA), and Bailey's Elementary School, bringing the number of northern Virginia teams to ten and more than doubling the previous total.
We fully expect that existing clubs will grow over the years, and that new clubs will be added from time to time. The SYA program has grown from 25 to over 70 players, and the SYC program has grown from 40 to nearly 200 players. We expect similar results for all new clubs.
