SYA SPRING 2010 VOLLEYBALL SEASON

Online registration starts on December 1, 2009 and runs until February 15, 2010.  The cost this year will be $100.00 per child.* Please note, that there will be an additional Fairfax County fee of $30, if your child lives outside of Fairfax County.   If your child should make one of our Travel Teams the cost is $125.    We will have girl’s travel team(s) at the 7/8 grade and High School levels this season to play matches against teams from Springfield, McLean, and other local area organizations.   We will keep our web site up to date on all volleyball information.  SYA volleyball is co-ed, boys and girls play together for the 4-6 grade, 7/8 grade and high school age house teams.

There will be a coaches’ meeting on December 13, 2009, 7:00 PM at the SYA office, call me for directions, Dave Lacey 703-615-2606.  Additional meetings will be held in January and February.

The season will start around March 16 and go until about June 1.  We will have the following age groups: 4/5/6 grades, 7/8 grades and high school.  Those 6th grade children wanting to play at the 7/8 grade level will have to try out with the 7/8 grade children.  You will also need to indicate this desire when you sign your child up so that we know to contact you for his/her skill assessment time.  The 7/8 age grade level and the high school age children will have to go through a skills assessment review so that we can balance the teams out in those two age groups.  The skill assessment will take place in February.  We will contact you in early February to give you the exact date/time and location.  They will only take about 20 minutes.  The 4/5/6 grade children can indicate whom they would like to play with when they sign up.  We will do our best to place them with their friends.  If your child is in 6th grade and has not played before, he/she will be placed with the 4/5/6 grade level.  This is to ensure that every child plays at an appropriate skill level.  Travel team tryouts will take place first and we will notify everyone when they will take place.  If your child should not make one of those teams, then she will also go through the general skill assessments noted above.

Practices are on Monday or Tuesday and most matches will be on Wednesday or Thursday, though some could be on Friday.  Please note that due to the 7/8 grade and high school teams being defined by the skill assessments we will not ensure that other players are placed on your child’s team.

Right now it looks like the travel team tryouts will be on February 11, 2010 at Liberty Middle School and the house skill assessments will be on February 18, 2010 at Liberty Middle School.

We will offer coaches’ and players’ clinics in February or March of 2010 before the season starts.  The season will consist of one practice and one match per week running from March 16 to about June 1, 2010 all during the week.  There are no weekend activities, except for the final all-star event on June 5, 2010.  The all-star event is played against the all-star teams from other local youth volleyball organizations.  SYA volleyball will once again make its all-star selections by providing each of its teams a specific number of players to be chosen who are then given the opportunity to try out against the other SYA players in that age group and from the tryout a given number of players will be chosen depending on the total number of teams entered by SYA in each age group.

If you have any questions, please contact me, Dave Lacey, at 703-615-2606.
