Fairfax County Budget Cuts2/1/2010
To all SYA Members
Please reference the attached letter, regarding budget cuts, that was sent from the Fairfax County Athletic Council to the Fairfax County School Board. SYA wants to ensure that you are informed of all issues that could potentially affect your youth sports program. We encourage you to read the Council's letter and advise your District Supervisor and the School Board of your opinions. The SYA Board of Directors endorses the Athletic Council's position, from this standpoint. If any High School sport is eliminated due to budget cuts, there would be a negative impact to youth sports in general. This impact would be specific to fields and gyms and the assignment of those. To explain further, the fields and gyms that High School sports use, are the same fields and gyms that youth groups use. However, the High Schools use these facilities mostly between the hours of 2:30pm-4:30pm. Youth groups do not use these facilities until after 4:30pm. If these sports are eliminated, the impact would be a large influx of teams that would seriously stretch an already large deficit in field and gym space.
However, we also want you to be aware that those specific SYA sports impacted are actively working on plans for this large influx of children that could join SYA. We encourage you to read, be informed and actively voice your opinions to the appropriate officials.
