SYA Warriors & Lady Warriors Lacrosse

SYA Warriors and Lady Warriors Lacrosse offers instruction (fall clinic and spring season) and team play (spring season) for boys and girls from age 6 to 16.  Boys are divided into the following age groups: Under 17 (U-17), U-15, U-13, U-11, and U-9. A player’s age group is determined by his age on August 31 of the calendar year most recently completed. For example, if your son was nine years old on August 31, 2011, he will be placed in the U-11 age group, since he won’t be under nine years old on August 31, 2011. Girls are grouped by grade, 1st & 2nd, 3rd & 4th, 5th & 6th, 7th & 8th.  Age and grade groups are divided into the skill levels of A - highly skilled, B - moderately skilled, and C - skilled, and beginners.

We participate in the Northern Virginia Youth Lacrosse League (NVYLL) during our spring season, and compete against 24 other youth lacrosse organizations in the Northern Virginia area including: Alexandria, Algonkian, Annandale, Arlington, Ashburn, Braddock Road, Chantilly, Dulles South, Fairfax Police, Falls Church, Fauquier, Fort Hunt, Great Falls, Herndon, Loudoun West, Massassas, McLean, Prince William, South County, Spotsylvania County, Springfield, Stafford, and Vienna.

UPDATE! Alex Nieves Making Progress!

Salisbury State lacrosse player Alex Nieves

On December 21, 2010, one of our former lacrosse athletes, Alex Nieves, was diagnosed with Leukemia and he began the first of eight rounds of chemotherapy that day. On July 22, 2011 he completed his 8th and final round of treatment. Unfortunately, on July 23rd, he suffered a major setback and contracted pancreatitis which is one side effect of the last round of chemotherapy drugs he was administered. He was admitted to the ICU in critical condition and placed on a ventilator for eight days.  Since that time he has endured two stomach surgeries to remove the
infection caused by the pancreatitis, four lung aspirations, and has had a total of six drains placed into his abdomen to drain the abscesses.  His weight plummeted to 126 lbs.

Today, we are happy to report that Alex is home recovering and is currently pushing 150lbs. the disease remains in remission and has begun his maintenance chemotherapy regimen that will continue for another 18 months. He is hopeful to return to Salisbury University in January, but we are unsure whether or not he will play lacrosse this spring for the Seagulls due to all the setbacks.

Alex and his family is part of our extended SYA family and we cannot wait to see him again soon wearing the #6 Salisbury lacrosse jersey and scoring for the National Champions. Thank you for your continued thoughts and prayers.

Alex’s progress can be monitored on the Facebook page "ROCK THE ORANGE" which his sister recently created.
