Christina McDonald and Doug Silver
2011 Softball Volunteers of the Year

Trophy graphicCongratulations to Christina McDonald, our Majors Coordinator, and Doug Silver, our Field Maintenance Director, for being named the 2011 SYA Softball Volunteers of the Year!

Christina took on the additional responsibilities of managing our Junior and Little Junior leagues during the Fall 2011 season, brokered a unique arrangement with the Vienna Girls Softball League to give our Juniors team some competition, and helped create a fall clinic for our Little Juniors. She did this all while managing the Major league in her usual very efficient manner.

Doug puts in countless hours year round, including the off season, and the result is that our softball fields are in the best shape they have ever been. He repairs much equipment himself, and makes sure that every field has supplies for coaches to prepare fields for practices and games. His contacts within Fairfax County have been invaluable when problems arise. Doug also coaches a select level Seniors team.

Guest pitching coach Kathy Moore will be on hand

The SYA Softball winter clinics are a hit!  The February clinic is sold out for Juniors/Minors with a waiting list, but we have room for three more Majors/Seniors (born in years 2000 or earlier).

Only two Sunday afternoons remain in the gym at Deer Park Elementary School, 15109 Carlbern Drive, in Centreville. Guest pitching coach Kathy Moore will be working with pitchers at all levels from beginning to advanced.

If we have room, we’ll accept drop-ins for $10.00 at the door (cash or check only).  Please call Susan Starr at (571) 521-9294 before 1:00 pm on Sundays to find out if space is available.  Contact Susan at starr_susan@yahoo.com or (571) 521-9294 if you have any questions.

Have you considered being a softball coach?

Coaches and assistant coaches are always in short supply, particularly in the spring season when our enrollment is at its peak.

Any adult can be a coach, not just parents. Former coaches who really enjoyed coaching but the kids are grown now--come on back! Local college students who played softball make great assistant coaches and potential future head coaches. Adults who enjoy playing softball might be interested in coaching. Mature high school students, particularly those who played travel or house softball, are terrific assistant coaches for the younger girls. Of course, all volunteers must pass a background check for the safety of our players.

Our more experienced coaches are always happy to mentor new coaches. You won’t go it alone!
