The SYA youth wrestling program is designed to teach youth (male & female) ages 7 to 15 "Folkstyle" wrestling, the form of wrestling used in High Schools. In the off-season, advanced wrestlers also have the unique opportunity to practice and compete in Greco-Roman and Freestyle forms of wrestling, the forms of wrestling used in the Olympics. None of these forms bear any resemblance to “professional wrestling”.
SYA offers two integrated wrestling programs, one for beginners and one for advanced wrestlers, each having independent practice and competition schedules.
Beginners Program wrestlers compete individually in the Northern Virginia Wrestling Federation (NVWF) commonly referred to as “the Federation”. Federation wrestlers compete by age, weight and experience with other local youth wrestling clubs. Emphasis is placed on fun, safety, physical fitness and the development of proper wrestling techniques. No weight loss is required or encouraged. The goal of our Beginner Program is to develop advanced wrestlers within 1-3 years and transition them to our Advanced Program.
Advanced Program wrestlers compete as combined elementary school/middle school dual teams in the Capital Area Wrestling League (CAWL) , as well as at state, regional and national level events. The goal of our advanced program is to develop national champions and win the CAWL Championship Tournament and CAWL Championship Duals.
Practice takes place at Centreville and Westfield High Schools, weeknights beginning in November. Weekly, weekend tournaments/duals begin in mid-December and continue through the first week of March, culminating in both NVWF and CAWL Championship Tournaments.
