2019 SYA Little League Baseball at Union Mill Elementary

Jan 25, 2019

On January 23 and 24, SYA Little League Baseball/Softball  hosted ‘Baseball Days” at Union Mill Elementary School.  Nine SYA coaches and two Union Mill alumni volunteered their time to teach nearly 1,000 students a host of baseball skills.  In conjunction with the Union Mill staff, the students received detailed instruction and were able to showcase their hitting, throwing and catching skills.  The Potomac National’s Uncle Slam made a guest appearance.  The gym was filled with lots of smiles and enthusiasm for the sport during the two-day event.  Our thanks to the entire Union Mill staff especially Ms. Murray and her team of very patient physical education teachers.

2018 Willow Springs Elementary School Baseball Field Improvements

Aug 31, 2018

Ask anyone who played coach-pitch, machine-pitch, or kid-pitch baseball in their SYA Little League career, and they’ll likely have a story about the Willow Springs Elementary School baseball field.  Whether it was a home run or a double play, one part of the story would remain the same – broken benches and prickly vines snagging player’s uniforms while they waited for their turn at bat.

Thanks to SYA Little League baseball alum and Troop 577 Eagle Scout candidate Michael Rath, Willow Springs Elementary School baseball field received a face lift!  Michael, along with 18 of his fellow Scouts volunteered their time on August 19th to replace player benches and remove the mass of vines and overgrowth along the first base line and back fence.  We would like to thank Michael and Troop 577 (8 of whom were former SYA Little League baseball players) for contributing 159 volunteer hours to make our field safe to use again.  We invite all of our SYA baseball families to visit the new and improved Willow Springs Elementary School baseball fields.  Thank you Michael!

2018 SYA Little League Opening Ceremony

Apr 10, 2018

SYA Little League, sponsored by Glory Days Grill, hosted their 2018 spring season opening ceremonies indoors at Westfield High School in Centreville, VA.  Approximately 600 players spread across 60 teams participated.  A few of the league’s long-time sponsors, Glory Days Grill and Modell’s, had tables out with coupons and giveaways.  Centreville and Westfield High School Varsity and JV teams came out to celebrate with the players.  Guest speakers during the program included:

  • Supervisor Kathy Smith
  • Supervisor Pat Herrity
  • Centreville High School Varsity head coach Scott Rowland
  • Westfield High School Varsity assistant coach Dan Ritz
  • Glory Days marketing manager Katie Easterbrook

During the festivities, the citizenship award winners from both West and East divisions were recognized: Anthony Sloboda and Sophia Sharp respectively.

Also a special dedication to Doug Bishop was held, including a plaque that will be installed at the Cub Run fields.

In memory of Doug Bishop, we dedicate this plaque at Cub Run Elementary School to remember his efforts in the development of these baseball fields.  To a loving Father, Husband, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, Coach and Friend to All,  who cared about young boys and girls that loved the game of baseball. Doug spent countless hours working on, and maintaining these fields so that not only his own children and players could feel like major leaguers, but that all children in the future who play SYA Little League Baseball, will have the best experience possible. Doug’s passion for the game was only second to the love he had for our children and their dreams of being baseball players.  A life well lived: 3-4-1957 to 3-2-2017

A new program that will run during the month of April, Soles4Souls, will be collecting new or gently used shoes, through April 28.

Donation boxes will be setup at the snack shacks at Cub Run and LLV fields. Click here for more information.

And always a favorite, the team banner competition for best homemade and professional banners resulted in some very creative banners.

Special thanks to all the SYA Little League sponsors (/little-league-baseball-2/sponsors-little-league-baseball/) for their ongoing support of our league!
