Where does our registration money go?

SYA is a non profit organization run by volunteers.  There are many costs that go into running each and every sport.  The key factor to remember when asking "Where does Our Money Go", is to understand that our coaches are volunteers and are typically unpaid. While this breakdown is basic and does not cover every income or expense item, most everything is accounted for.

Income – Registrations, donations, sponsorships – we receive no income from local, state or other entities to run our programs.  We did get some assistance with COVID, but otherwise, none.

Expenses –

  • Uniforms and equipment – 30%
Whether its for jerseys, shirts, or any other product that is provided as part of registration fees, there are costs.  Equipment – every sport is different.  For instance helmets for football have to be replaced every 5-7 years and can cost up to $15,000.  While Soccer has nets, weight bags to secure goals, etc that must be maintained and replaced

  • Administrative fees – 18%
Some key items are insurance, background checks on volunteers, website maintenance, coach training programs such as PCA (Positive Coaching Alliance), financial audits, just to name a few.  (Don’t forget all that went into COVID protocols!)

  • League fees – 15%
Many of our programs play games in organized leagues and they charge fees – such as Little League, VYSA (Virginia Youth Soccer League), etc

  • Field Maintenance – 10%
We have fields, lots of them.  They all need to be maintained and there is a cost to it. This includes the fields at Fairfax County Parks like ECL, we are responsible for the field maintenance at this locations.

  • Advertising – 10%
SYA is in a very highly competitive area. There are many “for profit” programs out there that want you to play for them. We advertise to attract community and neighboring families to join and participate in our programs.

  • Staff – 10%
We do have a limited number of paid staff to help manage everything that we do, though the primary duties of the organization are run and operated by volunteers.

  • Fairfax County fees – 5%
The County charges fees to SYA. We use just about every school and park facility in Centreville and Clifton, and in order to obtain the permits that allow us to use these fields, there are fees.

  • Scholarships – 2%
We provide assistance to those in need to ensure every child is able to play.
